Bushido, then, is the code of moral principles which the knights were required or instructed to observe.

It is not a written code; at best it consists of a few maxims handed down from mouth to mouth or coming from the pen of some well-known warrior or savant.

More frequently it is a code unuttered and unwritten, possessing all the more the powerful sanction of veritable deed, and of a law written on the fleshly tablets of the heart.

It was founded not on the creation of one brain, however able, or on the life of a single personage, however renowned.

It was an organic growth of decades and centuries of military career.

【表現・文法】

observe : 「守る」という意味もある。「観察する」と覚えていたが「守る」という意味もあるか。このようなところが英語の難しさであろう。

organic growth : これにどのような日本語を当てるか、迷った。訳本によると「有機的生産物」と訳しているものもある。長い年月をかけて、たくさんの武士の生涯を通じて少しずつ形成されてきたものが武士道である、と新渡戸は述べているのであろう。「現代英文訓読法」ということで英文を区切り日本語訳を私なりにつけているが、それが絶対的なものではない。読者諸兄はその都度、適当な訳を各々考えていただきたい。

all the more : だからこそ一層　というような意味

I like him all the better for his faults. （彼には欠点があるからこそ、かえって一層私は彼が好きだ）

however able（どんなに能力があっても）　however renowend（どんなに有名であっても）：難しい表現だと私は思う。

however humble it is, there is no place like home.　

　　（どんなに粗末でも我が家ほど良いところはない）という表現の変形であろう

ここのセクションに４つの文章があるが、２番目 (More flequently ・・・) と３番目 ( It was an organic growth ・・・）は非常に難しい文章であると思う。

どこで区切るのか、何が省略されているのか、を見極めるのが難しい。訓読の文章をよく見て理解していただきたい。

【要約】

　武士道は武士の守るべき道徳的な徳目である。それは成文法ではないし、言葉で表せられたものではない。一人、二人の賢人が作ったものではない。数十年、数百年の時を経て多くの武士の人生を通じて培われたものである。それは実際に行動に強力な拘束力を持ち、人々の心に刻み込まれた掟である。
